Quantum dots have applications in a wide range of photonic and biotechnologies due to their outstanding optical properties. One problem with quantum dots is their tendency to lose efficiency over time due to instability of the ligands which encapsulate the active nanoparticle. A method to improve ligand stability would be of great value in packaging quantum dots for a variety of current and proposed applications.

Hexavalent chrome electroplating has significant environmental issues. Government andindustry have been searching for an alternative for more than a decade. In reaction to thedangers of hexavalent chrome production a ruling was recently made by the USDepartment of Labor’s OSHA (Occupational Safety & Health Administration) to reducethe allowable amount of airborne particles from 52ìg per cubic meter of air to 2.5ìg percubic meter of air. Industry is having significant issues in dealing with the reductions.
